Documentation & Quality

What is a Safety Data Sheet (SDS)?

The SDS is the handling-and-safety companion to the COA. Here's what it covers.

A handling-focused document

A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) provides structured information to support safe handling, storage and general precautions for a material. It is distinct from a certificate of analysis, which reports batch analytical results; the two documents serve different purposes.

Where it fits

In a research setting, an SDS supports how a material is handled and stored, while a COA supports what a batch was found to be. Together they cover complementary aspects of working with a material responsibly.

Availability

Where an SDS is supplied for a material, it should be reviewed as part of good practice. Where one is not provided, it can be requested; nothing here substitutes for the product-specific document.

Frequently asked questions

Is an SDS the same as a COA?

No. An SDS is about handling and safety; a COA reports batch analytical results.

Should I read the SDS before handling a material?

Reviewing any supplied SDS is good practice for safe handling in a research setting.
