Traceability: from batch to record

Traceability sounds abstract, but it's a simple chain: material → batch code → documentation. Here's how it works.

The chain

Traceability is the ability to connect a physical material back to the records that describe it. The link in the chain is the batch code: the vial carries a batch identifier, and the batch identifier points to batch-specific documentation such as a certificate of analysis.

Why buyers value it

For a research purchaser, traceability means being able to review what a specific batch was characterised as, and to keep that association in their own records. It supports confidence and good practice without relying on assumptions.

Keeping the chain intact

Recording the batch on receipt, labelling clearly, and filing documentation together keep the chain intact. If any link is missing — an unlabelled vial or an absent batch reference — it is worth resolving before proceeding.

Frequently asked questions

What holds the traceability chain together?

The batch code, which links a specific material to its batch-specific documentation.

What breaks traceability?

Missing labels or an absent batch reference, which stop a material being matched to its records.
